Before You Pay for Weight-Loss Jabs Online: Seven Vetting Questions Every UK Patient Should Ask

The surge in demand for GLP-1 weight-loss medications has produced a crowded and, frankly, uneven marketplace. Alongside well-regulated UK clinics staffed by qualified prescribers, there are websites that cut corners — skipping consultations, shipping medication without proper checks, or making promises no honest clinician would make.

The General Pharmaceutical Council and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have both issued warnings about illegitimate online sellers, and the MHRA has repeatedly flagged counterfeit weight-loss pens seized in the UK. Yet the responsibility for spotting a dubious provider still falls largely on the patient. This checklist gives you seven questions to ask — and what the answers should sound like.

1. Who Prescribes, and Are They Registered?

Every legitimate UK prescription must come from a registered prescriber: a GMC-registered doctor, a pharmacist independent prescriber, or a nurse independent prescriber. Ask the clinic who issues prescriptions and check that individual's registration on the GMC register or the GPhC register — both are free, public searchable databases.

A red flag: any service that issues medication on the basis of a questionnaire alone, with no consultation with a prescriber at all. In the UK, this is not a shortcut; it is a regulatory breach, and it puts you at genuine clinical risk.

2. Is the Pharmacy or Clinic Properly Registered?

If the service dispenses medication, the pharmacy should be registered with the GPhC and, in England, the website itself may need to be listed on the Care Quality Commission (CQC) directory if it provides regulated clinical services. Look for the EU/UK common logo for legal online pharmacies and verify the registration number rather than trusting a badge on the homepage.

3. Do They Promise Guaranteed Results?

No responsible clinician guarantees a specific amount of weight loss. Clinical trial data for semaglutide and tirzepatide shows meaningful average results, but individual responses vary widely, and some people tolerate these medications poorly or not at all. Websites advertising "guaranteed 20% body weight loss" or before-and-after imagery presented as typical outcomes should be avoided.

4. Is There a Dose Titration Plan?

Both Wegovy and Mounjaro start at low doses and increase gradually over weeks. This titration exists to manage side effects — nausea, vomiting and gastrointestinal discomfort are common early on. A quality clinic will explain your titration schedule clearly, check in as doses increase, and be willing to pause or reduce the dose if side effects become unmanageable. If a provider jumps straight to the maximum dose, walk away.

5. What Aftercare Is Offered?

The medication is one part of treatment; support is the other. Green flags include access to pharmacists for questions about side effects, dietary or lifestyle guidance, scheduled reviews of progress and suitability, and a clear process for stopping treatment safely. Ask specifically: who do I contact if I feel unwell, and how quickly will they respond?

6. Do They Check You Actually Qualify?

A trustworthy clinic will exclude you if you should be excluded. GLP-1 medications are not suitable for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, those with a personal or family history of certain thyroid cancers (medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2), and people with a history of pancreatitis, among other contraindications. If a provider approves you in minutes without asking about your medical history, medications or family history, its clinical process is inadequate.

7. What Happens to Your Data — and Your Money?

Reputable services process payments securely, state total monthly costs transparently (including consultation fees and delivery), and make cancellation straightforward. Be wary of subscription traps: unclear auto-renewals, pressure to buy multi-month bundles upfront, or hidden cancellation processes. Check the provider's privacy policy and confirm they comply with UK GDPR when handling your medical information.

The Bottom Line

A legitimate online weight-loss clinic should feel unhurried at the point of assessment and thorough at every stage afterwards. It should verify your identity and medical history, involve a registered prescriber in every decision, explain titration and side effects honestly, and offer genuine support once the medication arrives.

If a website fails even one of these seven tests, treat that as a signal to keep looking. Your health information, your money and your safety are all at stake — and the market will always contain providers who hope you won't check. Taking twenty minutes to verify registrations and read reviews from verified customers is the most valuable twenty minutes in any weight-loss journey that begins online.
